The Benefits of Diabetic Footwear

The main purpose of diabetic shoes is to achieve a proper fit to avoid “shearing”, the movement of the foot inside the shoe.  Diabetics with foot conditions are susceptible to developing sores on their feet, if they have poorly fitting shoes that they may not even feel.  This can lead to more serious problems if they can’t heal properly because of poor circulation.  Proper fitting diabetic shoes and inserts will prevent shearing by achieving total contact with the bottom of the foot  and reduce the risk of sores developing.  It is interesting to know that 60-70% of diabetics have mild to severe forms of nerve damage resulting in loss of sensation in their feet.  Of these, only 7% currently receive diabetic shoes.  According to the CDC: Comprehensive foot care programs can reduce diabetic amputations between 45 and 85%.

Insurance Coverage

Medicare B* provides coverage for one pair of shoes and three pairs of custom inserts per year if a person is 65 or older and has been diagnosed with Diabetes Type II and an accompanying foot problem related to the diabetes.  This includes neuropathy, poor circulation, foot deformity, amputation, pre-ulcerative callus or previous foot ulceration.  All the products from Dr. Comfort are over-the-counter and available for purchase without insurance, as well.  Please ask for prices.

*You may also be eligible for coverage through PA Medicaid or Highmark Blue Cross.  Please contact Jodi for more information.
